Mrs. Walker's Super Star Handbook 2015
Who are the super stars?
The Super Stars are the students assigned to Mrs. Walker’s first grade classroom. They are awesome individuals who will each contribute their unique talents to our classroom. I will be the ‘Guiding Star’ as we ‘rocket’ through a variety of learning experiences that will help them grow into life-long learners.
Who is Mrs. Marley?
I am a Smith County native. I graduated from Forks River Elementary School and Smith County High School. I received an Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Volunteer State Community College. I taught for Head Start centers in both Smith and Sumner counties for seven years. In 2011, I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological University. I am highly qualified to teach K-6th grade. I spent a year in the SPED classroom at Defeated Elementary. I taught 3rd grade at New Middleton and 4th grade math and science here at Carthage Elementary. This will be my second experience teaching first grade. I completed my student teaching in a first grade classroom at Gordonsville Elementary, and I am super-excited to have the opportunity to teach first graders again!!!
I have been married to the sweetest man, Dale, since 2005, and we were blessed with a precious little boy, John Allen, in January 2010. You will hear about John Allen’s antics quite a bit, as he is my life (and very entertaining)! We LOVE going to Chattanooga and will often take a few trips to our favorite city each year. We also enjoy participating in many of the festivals and special family events in Nashville.
Binders
We will be using a binder this school year. The binder is where we will place notes to and from school, homework, graded papers, etc. It will be the student’s responsibility to make sure their papers are signed, shown to parents, turned in, and/or placed in the folder to be returned to school.
Rocket Math
I like to use the Rocket Math program to help students become fluent with addition and subtraction skills. While we will be doing the program in the classroom, I do encourage students to work on their facts at home. It is our goal for students to know their math facts as soon as they see them, just like sight words. I will send a note home once we begin Rocket Math that describes exactly what we’ll be doing and how it works.
Classroom Rules
1. Follow all directions the first time they are given.
2. Show respect to people and things.
Ø When students show respect to other people, they use manners (please/thank you), share, are honest, and treat others as they would like to be treated. When students show respect to things, they treat items with care, clean up messes, only write/color on paper, and don’t take things that aren’t theirs.
3. Use nice words.
Ø Students should not call others names that may hurt their feelings, tease, or use inappropriate words (shut up, stupid, suck, curse words, etc.)
4. Keep all body parts to yourself.
Ø Students should keep their body in their own space. They should not hit, pinch, kick, rub, poke, etc.
5. Be kind.
Ø Always treat others the way you want to be treated. Think before you speak or act: Is it true? Is it helpful? Will it hurt someone else?
Classroom expectations
I want every student to feel safe in our classroom and to be free from physical and emotional harm. We are all responsible for our classroom environment. Students need to develop good work habits and self-discipline, as well as learn how to peacefully resolve conflicts, respect other people and property, and cooperate.
As Super Stars, I expect them to:
v accept responsibility for their choices,
v be prepared for class,
v listen carefully,
v follow all directions the first time they are given, and
v always do their best!
**I am including a copy of our classroom’s Student Rights and Responsibilities here. We will go over these in class, and each student will sign a copy. It is important that each student realizes that they play an integral role in the teaching-learning process of our classroom.
Student Rights and responsibilities
I have the right:
· to learn while in school.
· to fair and equal treatment.
· to learn in a safe place.
I have the responsibility to:
· treat adults and peers with respect.
· obey school and classroom rules.
· listen and not talk when the teacher is talking.
· be prepared for class.
· participate in classroom activities.
· complete assignments given by my teachers.
· not distract others from learning.
Rewards and consequences
Positive behavior is encouraged and reinforced in my classroom. I like to focus more on the positive behavior than any negative. Positive behavior will be reinforced with rewards, such as praise, positive notes or calls to parents, a shout-out on our website, or something special from my Super Star Rewards folder. Super Star Rewards include such awesome things as eating lunch in the room with me, being Teacher’s Pet for a day, shoe-free in the classroom, and swapping desks with a friend for the day. The full list of Super Star Rewards and a brief description of each can be found on my website (which has its own section in the handbook). Whole group positive behavior and compliments from other adults on our awesome behavior will result in a ‘moon rock’ being placed in our container. Once that container is full, the whole class will receive a reward, such as popcorn and a movie or an ice cream party!
Students need to start being responsible for their choices. Therefore, when a student chooses to break a rule, they have also chosen the consequence that follows. Logical consequences will occur when class rules are broken. An example would be repairing damaged property after one damages classroom property. I do not have an inclusive list of consequences because it is impossible to predict what may occur during the year. We (parent, student, and I) will work together to improve behavior and solve problems when needed. Students will rarely be sent to the office, and then, only as a last resort.
We will have cards to help keep up with our behavior daily. Students will start with 5 cards. If a student breaks a rule, they will receive a verbal warning. After the warning, students will have to pull a card when they have broken a rule. I will complete a behavior chart each day to be sent home. You will sign it and send it back to school. This will help track behavior and let you know how everything is going during the school day. Here is a break down of the colors and their meaning:
· Green – Yeah! I had a good day! (no cards pulled)
· Blue – Oops! I have had two warnings. (1 card pulled)
· Yellow – 3rd warning. 5 minutes walking the fence at recess (2 cards pulled)
· Pink – 4th warning. 15 minutes walking the fence at recess (3 cards pulled)
· Black – Uh-oh! I am struggling. Isolated lunch. (4 cards pulled)
· No cards left – Ouch! Not a good day. Depending on behavior – principal and/or detention (all 5 cards pulled)
*Students who stay on green all day will earn a ticket for good behavior. Tickets are cashed in for special rewards (found in section below)
Homework
I do not want to send students home with a backpack full of books and assignments each night. However, we must practice the skills and concepts we have learned. There will be assignments daily. Students will usually have time during the school day to complete all assignments, as long as they use their time wisely.
The binder is where I want students to place all assignments completed at home. It should go between home and school every day. Completed homework assignments should be placed in the pocket labeled “Bring back to school.” When students get in the habit of placing their homework in the same place, they are less likely to misplace it, which brings us to Missing Work. Points will be deducted from work that is turned in late. The ONLY exception is work that is late due to an excused absence. On Thursday afternoons, students will receive an IOU sheet that lists their missing work. Students must turn in missing work on Friday. Students with more than 3 missing assignments will have their parents notified.
Students should write all homework assignments in their planners daily, whether they have completed the assignment or not. I want parents to know what we have done in the class that day, as well as what their child is responsible for the next day. Also, I will post homework assignments on our website every day.
*I will fill out their planners at the beginning of the year until students are able to copy assignments in the appropriate places. No worries J
Our Class Website
I have created a classroom website to increase communication between home and school. The website has homework assignments, a copy of this handbook, helpful links for extra practice at home, important reminders, and other little goodies to connect home and school. You can check out the website at http://thespiffyteacher.weebly.com and stay up-to-date with our classroom. This is also the best way to communicate with me. You can email or leave a comment, and I will receive a notification on my phone. I will respond as soon as I can.
Technology
We will be using computers in the classroom and lab. It is important that the students become comfortable with typing and using computers. Many of the assessments we use are only given online. There are online components to both our reading and math curriculum for extra practice and help. I would like to encourage students to use technology at home, if available. Please allow students to practice typing and using their new computer skills as home.
Routines and procedures
Absence Procedure – When students are absent, I will place missed assignments and the missed assignment sheet (that must be signed) on the clipboards by the door. Students must bring a note upon return to school. Make-up work will need to be completed in three days.
Morning Routine – School begins at 8:00 each morning. Students arriving in the classroom after the 8:00 bell are tardy and will need a note from the office. It is important that all students are here by 7:55 to minimize disruptions and get the morning started on a positive note. Please remember breakfast for all students is free. Breakfast starts being served at 7:30. This is the routine that Super Stars need to follow EACH morning:
1) Unpack backpack and hang up belongings.
2) Place materials needed at desk and assignments in work trays. Lunch money and any notes should be given to Mrs. Walker.
3) Make sure you have 2 sharpened pencils.
4) Place number magnet on appropriate lunch choice.
5) Copy down daily assignments in planner.
6) Begin working on the morning work. (There will always be a short assignment on the board or at students’ desks each morning.)
Attendance Procedure – All students are assigned a number (1-19) to help identify their belongings and work. For attendance, students will place their number on either the ‘lunch at school’ or ‘lunch at home’ sign. This lets me know that the student is present and helps with lunch count.
“Give Me Five” Procedure – The students and I will practice this procedure until it runs smoothly. I use “Give Me Five” when I want the attention of the students. I will raise my hand and wiggle my fingers while saying, “Give me five.” When a student sees or hears the signal, they will give me five: 1) Stop all movement. 2) Say, “Give me five.” 3) Look at me. 4) Stop talking. 5) Listen for instructions. Students will join in as they see/hear the procedure taking place. I prefer using this procedure rather than ringing a bell, raising my voice, or flashing the lights. Once students have the procedure down, this is the most effective way to gain everyone’s attention.
Breakfast, Lunch, and snack
Meal prices for the 2014-2015 school year are: breakfast – free, student lunch - $2.25, adult lunch - $3.75, and child visitor lunch - $3.25. (Fill out a form for free/reduced lunch if you think your family qualifies. The form is pink and is found in the green folder.) Lunch money needs to be sent to school in a sealed envelope or snack sized zip lock bag with the student’s first and last name written on the outside. Their binder would be a wonderful place to put any money that needs to be turned in to school.
We will have snack time each afternoon. Students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks or may buy snack from the machines at school. Water is $1.00 and food snacks are $.75. No sodas or gum are allowed in the school. There may be days when we are running short on time and have a ‘working snack,’ this just means that we must eat our snack while still working on an activity or assignment. Most of the time, students will be given free time to enjoy their snack and socialize with classmates.
Class meetings
The Super Stars will have class meetings weekly to discuss any problems or concerns that affect our classroom and for OLWEUS (information will be sent home soon). Students are allowed to submit “new business items” to be placed on the agenda by writing it down and placing it in the box on my desk. Students may submit items anonymously, if they feel uncomfortable attaching their name to a problem that arises. The Super Stars are allowed to make recommendations on how to fix problems and will vote on which strategy to use.
Book Orders, Reading, and Pie Club
I will send home Scholastic book order forms once a month. You are not obligated to place an order. I like to send these home because you can often get great books for less than you would pay anywhere else. If you would like to order a book for your child, just fill out the form, and send it and the payment in a labeled envelope to school before the due date. The books will be delivered to school and sent home with your child. You can also order online (and see other books). There is a link to Scholastic on the home page of my website.
I LOVE to read! I hope you do, too, because we are going to read, read, READ this year. Most of the students participated in the AR program last year. However, this year there has been a change to our program, and it is for 2nd and up only. We will still be reading lots of books. I will let students use a program to earn points to be offered membership in the Pie Club when they reach their goal. What is the Pie Club? The Pie Club is an exciting club only found in Mrs. Walker’s classroom, and all of my students have been invited to join. The Pie Club is my incentive for students to read and achieve their goal. Any student that reaches their goal before the end of the school year will get to throw a pie in my face! Parents are invited to attend the initiation. It’s always fun to watch the kiddos smash a pie in their teacher’s face.
Parent involvement
A good parent-teacher relationship is a must for maximum school success. I want to work closely with you to ensure that each student is successful this year and in the future. We will have special classroom and school activities throughout the year. I encourage you to attend and volunteer when you are available. Extra hands and eyes are always welcome and appreciated, especially for field trips. Please let me know ahead of time when we can expect you. Many opportunities will be available, a few include: working in the classroom (reading, assisting students, etc.), constructing classroom materials at home (I will provide the supplies) or donating reusable items (empty containers, boxes, etc.), or chaperoning field trips. I will send notes home this year when volunteers are needed. I hope to see you in the classroom having a blast with us.
Communication between home and school is most important. I may be reached via email ([email protected]), phone (615-735-0433), website (http://thespiffyteacher.weebly.com), or before and after school. I look forward to getting to know my Super Stars and their families – here’s to an awesome 2015-2016 school year!
Helpful hints for a super year

· Have a special place to keep homework and school materials so you always know where to find them each morning.
· Administer medicine before and/or after school. We can only administer long-term medications with a doctor’s note.
*As other things come up, I may add corrections or sections to this handbook. We will just attach any new pages to the handbook, which will be kept in the binder for easy access J
